Discussion
1.
Following God’s pattern
a.
God has a pattern in the universe
i.
our
ability to put a man on the moon involves understanding the pattern for the
motion of the earth and the moon
ii.
Every tree has a pattern for its
leaves
b.
Rom 6:17 – “the form (or
standard) of teaching to which you were committed” – 2 Thess 2:15
c.
Communion follows a pattern – 1
Cor 11:23
d.
Singing follows a pattern – Eph
5:19
e.
Colossians 4:16 suggests that what
was taught in one place was to be taught in every place
2.
Christian unity depends upon
following a pattern
a.
False teaching exists – Matt
7:15; Acts 20:29-30; Titus 3:10-11
b.
Eph 4:4-6 – there is “one”
– there is no unity apart from the things that unify
c.
Ask those who have believed false
doctrine if truth matters – the 9/11 hijackers, the people at Jonestown, the
people at Waco
d.
Ask those who believe the truth if
truth matters – Peter, Paul, Stephen, James
3.
Repentance brings us into agreement
with the pattern
a.
John the Baptist preached
repentance (Matt 3:2) because the restoration of Israel could be accomplished in
no other way
b.
Peter preached repentance because
the church could be built upon no other foundation – Acts 2:38
c.
Consider the man with the broken
leg – pain relief does not solve his problem, but fixing the broken leg
d.
Many churches today are helping to
ease people’s pain, but without repentance there is no solution to one’s
problems
Conclusion
1.We
are committed to a return to New Testament doctrine
2.
Commitment to New Testament doctrine is a commitment to Jesus as Lord –
Luke 6:46
3.
One is not committed to Jesus without immersion in his name for the
forgiveness of your sins – Acts 2:38
