The Reign of Jesus

Psalm 2

Introduction

1.      Most of the Psalms were written about 3000 years ago – most were written by King David of Israel

2.      Several contain predictions that concern Jesus

3.      The second Psalm is among that group  

Discussion

1.      Opposition leads to the coronation

a.       The Jewish leaders opposed Jesus – Matt 26:62-66  

b.      The Roman governor crucified Jesus – Matt 27:27-31  

c.       No one spoke up to save Jesus – Matt 27:55-56  

d.      See Acts 4  

2.      Jesus reigns from Zion

a.       Zion is a hill in Jerusalem from which David reigned over Israel – 2 Sam 5:6-7  

b.      Jesus takes the place of David as King over Israel – 2 Sam 7:16  

c.       The nations are invited to come and sit at the “table” – Matt 22:1-14  

d.      Jesus’ throne is at the right hand of God – Acts 2:33-36  

3.      God demands that the nations give homage (worship) to the Son of God

a.       People want choice without consequences – Buddha, Mohammed, self – there are only two prophets whose coming was predicted:  John the Baptist and Jesus  

b.      Choice without consequences is inconsistent with the sovereignty of God

                                                            i.      Adam and Eve – Gen 3:1-3

                                                          ii.      Noah – Gen 6:5-8

                                                        iii.      Israel in their worship of other gods  

c.       Matt 28:19; Mark 16:15; Luke 24:47; Acts 1:8  

Conclusion

1.       Most religious groups treat Jesus like an absentee landlord – “He’s not around so we can get away with anything we want to do”

2.      Paul’s description:  Col 1:15-18

3.      The Christian life begins with an acknowledgement of Jesus in baptism – Acts 2:38

4.      The Christian life ends with an acknowledgement of Jesus in judgment – John 5:21-22
