Jesus’ Miracles

Matthew 9:1-8

Introduction

1.       Thirty years from Jesus’ birth to his ministry of teaching and healing

2.       Only a few knew the details of his birth; many would be witnesses of his miracles

3.       The miracles of Jesus

a.       Came from his compassion

b.       Were clearly miracles to the people who saw them

c.       Confirmed his mission as the Son of God  

Discussion

1.       Jesus’ miracles flowed from his compassion

2.       Jesus’ miracles were open to examination for their verification as works beyond the ordinary

a.       Mark 3:1-6 – the man in the synagogue with a withered hand  

b.       The Gerasene demoniac – Mark 5:14-16  

c.       The raising of Jairus’s daughter – Mark 5:40-42  

d.       Luke 13:10 -17 – the woman in the synagogue, bent double for 18 years – a sickness caused by a spirit  

3.       Jesus’ miracles confirmed his words

a.       Mark 2:10 – included in Mark and Luke as well  

b.       Luke 4:36 – the healing of the demon-possessed man in the synagogue  

c.       Luke 7:11-17 – the widow of Nain’s son – “A great prophet; God has visited His people”  

d.       John 9:1-3 – the blind man in Jerusalem – John 9:38

Conclusion

1.       One or two miracles might be dismissed – Jesus’ miracles are without number

2.       Healing of unknown persons might be dismissed – Jesus healed those who were well known to those witnessing the miracle

3.       Miracles performed by those who contradict the Bible may be dismissed – Jesus delivered the truth from God

4.       If you believe in Jesus, you need to repent and be baptized in order to be His disciple – Matt 28:18-20
