The Road to Golgotha

Matthew 26:27-37

Introduction

1.      All the reasons that might be given as to why I am a Christian can really condensed to one:  Jesus died for my sins and was raised for my justification

2.      Golgotha is the proper Biblical name for the place of Jesus’ crucifixion

3.      Golgotha was just a hill until Jesus died there  

Discussion

1.      A road chosen by God

a.       The Christian religion, alone, has one sacrifice for sins  

b.      In common with other religions there is the idea of personal “sacrifice”  

c.       The roots of Jesus’ sacrifice are found in the sacrifices before the law and the sacrifices of the law  

d.      Psalms 2 and Isaiah 53 stand out among the prophecies of Jesus’ death  

2.      A winding road through the villages of Galilee

a.       The popularity of Jesus – Matt 8:1; 15:29-31; 19:2; 20:29  

b.      The one exception, at his home in Nazareth – Matt 13:53-58  

c.       Two occasions in which he fed the multitudes, 5000 and 4000 respectively  

d.      But “all roads lead to Jerusalem”  

3.      A lonely road through the streets of Jerusalem

a.       The abuse of Jesus by the high priest and the Jewish council  

b.      The abuse of Jesus by the Roman soldiers  

c.       The public display of Jesus as a criminal at Golgotha  

d.      The sign over the cross, “This is Jesus the King of the Jews” (Matt 27:37)
