Isaiah 6:1-8

Introduction

1.       Jesus’ response to Satan’s temptation – Matt 4:8-10

2.       God seeks people to worship Him – John 4:23  

Discussion

1.       Worship begins with a sense of awe in the presence of God

a.       Isaiah has a personal experience with the awesome presence of God and His angels

b.       The experience of Israel at Mt. Sinai

c.       Our age has reduced God to “The Jolly Green Giant” – by defining God as love, our world has evaded the need for fear in the presence of the Almighty

d.       Rev 4:5; Heb 10:30-31

e.       The word translated “worship” means literally, “to bow the knee toward”  

2.       Worship brings a sense of guilt in the presence of a righteous God

a.       Notice Isaiah’s response to what he saw – Is 6:5

b.       Notice the response of Peter when he saw the power of Jesus – Lk 5:8

c.       To understand the holiness of God is to understand our unholiness

d.       It is guilt that produces shame and sorrow; in turn that produces change in our lives

e.       Worship is intended to change us  

3.       Worship brings a sense of relief as we realize that we are in the presence of a God who forgives His people

a.       God does not leave Isaiah feeling guilty – Is 6:6-7

b.       Consider the place of communion in the church – remembering what Jesus has done that we might be forgiven – 1 Jn 2:1-2

c.       Consider the events of Pentecost Sunday – the Jews came to worship, their consciences were pricked by the preaching of Peter, they found forgiveness in repentance and baptism – Acts 2:1-41

d.       The Philippian jailor experienced the power of God in the earthquake, sought forgiveness at the feet of Paul and Silas, was baptized the same hour of the night  

4.       Worship fills us with a sense of responsibility to serve the God we worship

a.       See Is 6:8

b.       Our mission comes out of an understanding of the nature and character of God

c.       Our motivation comes out of love for Him who has given us everything  

Conclusion

1.       Those who worship God, must worship Him in spirit and in truth – John 4:24

2.       Our lives as Christians centers in what we do here together - this is not all of life, but it is that which sustains, nourishes and motivates us

3.       God calls people out of darkness to be His people and to worship Him
